“I do have a blue dress that would look lovely on you! Especially with your skin tone!” Jess joked. She took a bite of the sandwich and moaned. “Oh, this is delicious! Remind me to never not let you cook? You will cook food for me until the day I die,” Jess smiled and took another bite.

“Naah, I don’t think blue is really my colour.” He joked back, shaking his head in mock disapproval. He took his seat across from her, “It’s just grilled cheese stuck on some bread, not that hard to make.” he shrugged, but his pride in making yet another dish Jess loved was obvious in his voice. “But of course I will.”

“How is it you always know what I want?” Jess said, pecking Becker on the lips. “I’m just going to slip into something comfy, don’t be too surprised if I come out in your entire closet!” Jess said with a wink. She bobbed into the bedroom and slipped into a flannel shirt and an old pair of gym shorts. She walked into the kitchen and inhaled that wonderful smell of melting cheese. She sat at the table and peeled a banana. Taking a bite and watching Becker cook.

“Oh, if only I did” he thought as she pecked him on the lips before disappearing into the bedroom. He couldn’t help but smile when she came back wearing his favorite flannel. “I remember you buying pregnancy outfits. Many, many outfits. If I remember correctly, I had to hold the bags full of them while you went to check just one more store. Yet you insist on wearing my clothes.” He chuckled as he brought her plate over to her, “I love it, but what am I going to wear? The maternity clothes?” He asked before going to the fridge to make himself a simple turkey and cheese sandwich.

“Yeah…it is, isn’t it?” He asked, taking a glance up at the next light. “Maybe we’ll move out here someday. Get out of the city. Would you like that? It’ll take a bit of extra work to get the money, but we could do that if you want.” He had never pictured himself leaving the city, but then again…he’d never pictured himself as a dinosaur hunter, the fiance of somebody as mind blowing as Jess Parker, or a father. And maybe, just maybe, he liked that picture much better.

“It sounds brilliant,” Jess smiled even wider. “We can build a tree-house ..” Jess trailed off in thought. She had always wanted a tree-house, but there aren’t trees in London.

“I had one growing up. My granddad and I built it. I’d be more than happy to build one with you too.” He smiled as they drove on. “I’ll build you whatever you want. Or I’ll try to anyway.” He let her ramble on and he just listened to her, falling more and more in love with the idea of getting out of the city as she spoke her grand ideas. The time passed quickly listening to her and they were home in no time. Just in time too, the London weather was setting in and it was starting to rain. It was likely they’d wake up to a downpour and have to drive to work in it. “At least it held up while we were out.” he grinned and took his jacket off to hold over her head as they walked to the door. “How about a quick dinner and bed? I’m beat. Sandwiches sound good? I could make you a cheese toastie even.”

Jess smiled strongly and looked out the window. She could see the dim glow of London just near the horizon. Jess reached up and pulled back the sunroof, lowering her chair to near horizontal. Jess looked up at the sky and began to count the stars, noting each one as it faded in the light of the city. “It’s beautiful,” she said softly.

“Yeah…it is, isn’t it?” He asked, taking a glance up at the next light. “Maybe we’ll move out here someday. Get out of the city. Would you like that? “I agree completely. We really must, before it gets this bad…” Jess said. She smiled weakly at Becker. They shouldn’t even have to do this, their life together shouldn’t be stressful.

Becker noticed the weakness of her smile and gave her a loving smile in return. “Hey, don’t worry about it Beautiful, you can’t control your emotions right now, I understand. It’s me who has to work on not letting it get like this. Don’t blame yourself, alright?” He reached over and squeezed her shoulder, “We’ll get through this.” he said as he dropped his hand from her shoulder and started the truck, headed for home.

“I wish we could just stay like this forever.” he heaved a sigh and ran his fingers along her arm. “Sadly, we should probably head home soon. I don’t think it’d be wise to sleep here…do you?” he asked with a small, breathy laugh, his fingers still tracing up and down her arm.

“Probably not the best idea,” Jess said. Taking a deep breath and letting it out in a sigh. “Specially because we’ve left both our mobiles at home.”

Becker closed his eyes a moment before saying, “Let’s do this again sometime” and nuzzling against her neck. “For now…I s’pose it’s time to head home.” He straightened up, gently pushing Jess off his chest as he did, and with another sigh he slid off the tailgate, then offered his hand to Jess to help her down. He didn’t let go of her hand when she was down, instead he lifted his free hand to fix her fly away hairs and with a smile, walked her to her door and helped her in. “I’ll take care of the blanket, no worries.” he said as he closed her door, then headed back around the fold the blanket up and pack it away. He made his way to his own door and once the truck was started, he turned on the SAT NAV and set it for home. “I mean it…let’s do something like this again some time. Maybe before all the stress gets to us.”

Becker shifted so he could pull Jess closer and hold her against him. He gently kissed the top of her head, “I know. I shouldn’t take it so hard. I should know you don’t mean it by now.” He sighed into her hair before saying, “This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me too. Even though I get scared out of my mind sometimes…because yes, sometimes the thought of holding a baby scares me more than that thought of taking on a full grown t-rex…it’s all I’ve ever wanted. And to have that with you?” He paused to smile down at her, “I could not have asked for more. I am beyond lucky.” He placed another kiss, this time on her cheek. “I love you so much. Both of you. And I always will.”

Jess stayed like that for a moment, and it felt like the entire world had melted away. They were happy, there was no anomaly alert, no phone calls, no sirens, no lights, nothing to do with money, or the future, and it felt brilliant. “I love you, and you are perfect,” Jess snuggled into Becker a bit more, and she listened to the steady beat of his heart. She felt each rise of his chest push her away, but then welcome her back again.
